I Lose Synths, Strings & Keys in MONO :(

Hi J! I heard that the songs we listened in your masterclass don´t lose too much in MONO. I mean non of the instruments totally desapear! In my case I frequently lose pads, some keys, strings and stuff like that in MONO. And the problem is not in the panning!..this happens to me sometimes even they are in the center! What could be happening ? Maybe the phase of the instrument? some delays or reverbs could be making that problem? early reflections maybe? Thank u very much!

Hey Carmen - if the original sound is in mono the only reason you’d be “losing” the instrument is if something else was masking it. If you have a stereo signal that has a unique L and R channel there’s definitely a chance that collapsing it to mono is going to lead to phase issues. A lot of the references I played were songs from when I came up mixing, and back then it was super important to stay mono compatible as a lot of systems were still operating in mono. Nowadays, you don’t see this very often and even our smartphones play in stereo, so I really don’t pay attention to the mono compat and focus more on making sure my records have width
