Investing in a good mic (bedroom producer/artist)

Hi Jaycen,

Been watching your videos over and over. Thank you so much for sharing your tricks!=)

I am a bedroom producer + singer and I’m working on my first album ever, It’s for a modern electronic music / RNB album. What mics do you think I should buy just to try out at home and what mic pre amp should I get?

At the moment I can’t afford buying a mic for 10k like the ultimate pro mics, but maybe you could recommend me a few around 1k, 2k or 3k?

So far I’m thinking about trying these:

  1. Warm Audio WA-CX12
  2. Warm Audio WA-8000
  3. Lauten Audio Atlantis FC-387
  4. Neumann TLM 193
  5. Neumann TLM 103
  6. Neumann U87 Ai

Let me know if you think I should add any mic’s to my list or take any of them away.

And what mic pre amp should I get? I was thinking of using the Heritage Audio Successor as a mic pre amp for testing the mic’s, but maybe you have a better idea? I know these classic Tube Tech etc. sounds amazing but I’m not there yet financially.

Much love!
/Andy

Hey! Not going to act like an expert because I’m not but for what it’s worth, I may veer from the TLM 103. Been used by finneas when he was starting out but with time realized it was too bright. I’ve heard the same from others

Thanks for your input =) Do you know any other bright mic instead of the TLM 103 that is bright but not too bright and doesn’t sound “cheap”? I think I want to try to record with a mic that already sounds good, so that I don’t have to add a bunch of things too much later in the box.

Hey Andy,

since no ones ever talking about that mic, I feel like I should spread the secret. Try the Microtech Gefell M930, it’s really neutral and has nice and expensive highs. It’s also super compact which comes in handy when traveling.

All the best, Marc
