Level crawl when mixing

hey john! love your mixes on the new Billie Eilish record. and am very grateful for all the things you’ve shared about your process w live w matt rad and mwtm.

i have a question about level crawl in mixing. i find sometimes i set levels for a mix and 2 hours in look up and im taking down 5dB+ on my final mixbus limiter unintentionally. which my balance is now baked in with. how would you remedy a situation like this? Is it worth a start over?

Austin! That seems like quite the pickle! This is rare for me as I’m constantly checking my final stage limiter or clipper and adjusting as I go, but I’m a bit obsessive about that and many other things in life haha. I wouldn’t say you’d have to start over, but you could try lowering the inputs into certain plugins on your mixbus and start remaking the glue or gain in smaller incidents. Or maybe it’s just going to feel better a bit less limited and you win!
