Hi Andrew!
Sometimes, I find myself overthinking and obsessing about certain elements in a mix that after a couple of days and a fresh pair of ears, I realise they didn’t matter at all.
What would you say has helped you commit to a decision in the moment and on average, how long does it take you to completely finish a mix without second guessing any decisions you’ve made? Thanks!
Kind regards,
Matthew
Hi Matthew,
The answer to your question is in the question itself! Fresh ears. I know a mix is done if I open it up, hit play, and get to the end enjoying the song and not hearing anything I want to change.
It often happens that I’ll spend a bunch of time on something, then come back to the mix later or the next day and either it’s still bad or should have been left alone in the first place.
I think fresh perspective is the most important thing in mixing. Once you can get that happening then the amount of time it takes to finish is irrelevant. I probably spend anywhere from a few hours to a few days on any given mix, but it comes in small chunks so I can get away from it and listen fresh.
Thanks,
Andrew
