Hi Philip. Wow, I loved your masterclass so much! Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge with us. My recording attempts so far have sounded too sterile and tight, and I think I understand why now. I’m excited to try using omni and some different approaches.
I’m a longtime guitarist and songwriter, but new to recording. I have a few questions.
Mic Choice: For the main basic tracks, I’m recording myself playing guitar and singing. Been using an SM7B for vocals and an SM81 on guitar so far, and it’s far from the open sound I’m looking for. I’m wondering if you think an AKG c414 XLS on acoustic guitar in omni, and a Neumann U87 on vocals would be good mic choices? After a lot of research, those are what I’m looking into getting.
Omni Vocals?: Should the vocal mic be in omni too, or cardioid? I don’t think you mentioned which pattern you use on vocals in the videos.
Mic Placement: Any tips on where the two mics should be placed, or is it more just a matter of experimenting till it feels best?
DI Re-amping: I also often play a telecaster instead of acoustic. For some songs, I’ll be playing and singing at the same time, recording the tele with DI then re-amping later. Any tips for making it sound more “in the room” when re-amping?
Room: I don’t have a naturally good sounding room, so it’s very treated and dead. Perhaps that’s part of my problem and omni won’t help this. I could try to selectively liven it up a little. I could also try a completely different room.
ITB: Do you think this setup is possible to get a natural sound with all ITB processing?
I know that’s a lot of questions! And I know you’re busy making amazing music, so I understand if you don’t see this or don’t get to it. Thank you so much for any thoughts you might have!
