Question for Jon

Hello Jon, huge fan of your work on Hit Me Hard and Soft. I have a couple of questions.

  1. How did you reach that sound in the start of Chihiro? Cause it feels like the voice is floating between the instruments, sounds magical.

  2. What specific aspects of Finneas’s work stand out to you as remarkable, and what unique abilities or approaches does he have that set him apart from other producers?

Thanks for your attention, Paolo

Paolo! Thanks for the questions.

  1. Man that’s just paying attention to dynamic and balances. She floats in there on her own. Mostly controlling the low mid energy without taking much out so it keeps all the mystery and groove while finding a place to sit her in organically. Just a lot of trial and error on the right dynamic dips to make. Less additive and more subtractive overall.
  2. He’s simply himself. It’s clear to me he goes off instinct as a musician and whether it is or not, doesn’t come across overthought at all. He has a very unique way of keeping both rhythmic and harmonic movement in the instrumental arrangement, while never stepping on the vocal. This makes my job as a mixer more fun and creative. Less problems to solve. He’s truly one of a kind.

Cheers!
