Hi Catherine. Really appreciate you unpacking these sessions for everyone - I used a lot of the info in the Wolf Alice series in some of my work already! My question is about your analog summing chain and mix bus treatment in general.
I am trying to develop a somewhat stable mix bus chain of effects to implement in my workflow and I’m looking for some guidance on where to start. For context, I work fully in the box and whenever I mixed/mastered something I just improvised on the spot with your typical culprits (EQ, compression, tape, limiting etc).
How important is it to use mix bus-dedicated plugins (mix bus compression etc) instead of regular plugins?
In terms of headroom, levels and lufs, do you run in hot into the Fat Bustard or are you allowing for headroom going in? (In the context of my work where I need to master my mixes I’m wondering if you would advise me to keep my 2-bus input away from the reds and only exceed 0dBs within my mix bus chain so then the limiter at the end won’t have to do too much and the mix won’t suffer from over limiting) - I also noticed that the threshold on your obsidian recall sheet was somewhere into the positives (maybe +5db), how does that tie in with headroom in your chain?
Thank you in advance for attempting to tackle my mix bus dilemma! Hope you’ll be back with a new video series soon.
Bogdan
