I have watched a couple of your video’s and noticed you don’t use compression on every track. Am I correct? Is it because you love dynamics and unexpected eardrum tickling? Or using saturating as compression?
I use compressors more for the sound they impart and less for gain control. (This doesn’t mean I never use comps for gain contrl) In general I prefer gear, digital or analog, that colours a sound. If you tell me a piece of gear is transparent I’m more likely to not want to check it out.
So in answer to your question, I’ll add a compressor when I feel the need sonically.
And yes, riding levels, saturation and 2bus comp/lim combos are more than enough to control final mix levels.
