Generalize vs Specialize

Hey Ian, thanks for your great videos! I really enjoyed seeing your process with Kacey, and have admired your work for a long time.

When I was in college working on an audio engineering degree, the messaging was that it’s better to cultivate a really wide skill set and be able to offer just about any audio service to our clients. Songwriting, production, mixing, mastering, marketing, etc. I’ve heard opinions on the other side though, saying that it’s better to become a specialist (for example, a mix engineer in a narrow genre) and focus on collaboration with others to deliver all the services an artist needs.

What has your experience been on that spectrum? You’re working at a really high level, and I’m curious if the artists that you work with tend to prefer one or the other. Thanks for your insight!
