For the sake of brevity, let’s assume I have a consistent and decently accurate set of listening references/speakers.
I find that the frequencies in my mixes “work” in relationship to each other. The groove grooves, it’s intelligible, it translates on multiple references. It’s highly listenable to the average consumer. However, when I compare it to one of yours or your peers’ mixes, I find that my mixes sound like the highs are the “wrong” highs, mids are the “wrong” mids etc. and often times I don’t have a relevant enough reference mix to help guide me. What is the best way to start developing an internal compass of where my “brightness” or “punchiness” etc should be? I hope this makes sense.
P.s. so grateful for the hours of free education you’ve put out with Mat Rad and Just for the record etc. You’re my hero.
