What are the best plugins to get?

I’m been producing for over a year now and I was wondering what are some affordable or need to get plug ins. I’ve been using the default ableton and logic pro plugins and I want to mix it up.

Hi, @jess_uhrig , my advise is to pay a year subscription to a platform like plugin alliance or similar, where you have access to a great palette of plugins and, after a year of use, you can keep some of them, and you’ll know much better lots of plugins, so it will be much easier to decide which ones to buy.
Hope this is useful for you.

Mix with the masters videos and sound on sound articles have a lot of that information, but there really should be some kind of easy reference for basics like you mention. Of course people will tell you that it’s a personal preference which it is, but I think the most popular and used plug-ins in a list would be helpful, maybe others can share theirs, there are so many, but here are a few of mine:

Reverb - Valhalla Vintage verb (and shimmer)(they also have halls and plates, but these mentioned are really popular Go to) more high-end options are liquidsonics’ seventh heaven which emulate the Bricasti reverb

Delays and Fx - Check out sound toys Echo Boy

EQ - Fab Filter

Compressors - UA, Waves, Mac DSP

Distortion - fab filter, black box,

Ozone 11 - mastering (for reference, I but use mastering engineers)

See what others are using and become an expert on plugins. Good luck!!

Hey Jess,
In addition to the usual EQ suspects, may I also suggest you take a listen to PSPAudioware’s Neon HR and our own (MAAT) thEQ series. Also, as seen here in MwtM, our FiDef JENtwo.

Most important thing is not to fall into a plugin trap. There will always be someone to recommend this plugin or that plugin and having hundreds of plugins will not make you a better mixer, not to mention waste of money.

I would recommend to go for a SSL subscription which includes the Slate Digital plugins as well and you will have more than you’ll ever need as someone who is just starting out in mixing.
They also have educational discounts if you are a student.

If your music production and your mixing are actually earning money for you than you can consider some extra options. For now, keep it simple and go for SSL All Access subscription.

Happy Mixing :headphones:
