When you start a mix, what - if anything at all - can be a cause of stress in the back of your mind? (e.g., the quality of the recording, client’s strong views etc.)
Track count!!! Too many!!! Quality rarely bothers me. If it’s sub-standard it’s a license to experiment. If it’s all too beautiful it’s a license to fuck it up. I have no expectations going into a mix. Expectations are like a brick wall waiting to stop you cold. I try to improvise throughout. Let the music take me without any thought of where it’s suppose to go from anyone else. If the artist doesn’t like it in the end we talk. If we disagree, I know I’m not the right ears for the job. If we can find some common ground we work together to get what they want. I usually give myself the freedom to do it my way first. Just more fun to cut loose. You can always reign it in later.
