Approach and philisophy on mixing drums

Hi Josh,

I greatly appreciate you and all the masters at MWTM for taking the time to answer our questions.

I wanted to ask if you could share your approach and philosophy when it comes to mixing modern pop drums.

  1. Do you primarily work on individual tracks, or do you mostly rely on drum bus processing? If the latter, what is your typical order of processing (compression, saturation, EQ, etc.)?
  2. What are your thoughts on parallel compression or saturation, and do you use them in your mixing process?
  3. Do you use any clipping VST plugins on your drums to achieve overall loudness in your mixes? or maybe you achieve clipping by sending tracks to an analog summing mixer?
  4. Lastly, if you could share any general tips and tricks you’ve learned over the years regarding mixing drums, it would be greatly appreciated.

For reference, when discussing “modern pop drums,” I can think of tracks like “New Rules” by Dua Lipa or more recent ones like “Peaches” by Justin Bieber.

Once again, thank you for any guidance you can provide.

Best regards!
