Hello from Korea. Huge respect on your mix results, and congratulations to your success.
I am a producer and i self-mix my stuff.
I have watched finneas birds of a feather video and have some questions about your work on that record.
- finneas layers drums and looks like he didnt use tons of compressions, clippers or saturation. But drums sounds full and heavy. I am wondering how…
In my case, i feel i need clippers to get drums louder. Let’s say If i want to go -6.5 LUFS on the chorus… then drums should be around -10, -11 LUFS, in my opinion. But simply layering sounds like finneas, sometimes doesnt achieve that loudness. I often find my live drums stuck in -13, - 14 lufs without processing. so, i now use clippers on drums and then use limiters on stereo bus, to achieve that loudness. But clearly it sometimes sacrifices clearity and some transient so i am not fully satisfied with the sound quality. And i am wondering… is there any better approach?
In birds of a feather song, where did that loud drums come from? Is it achieved from mix? Or mastering? Or from Finneas?
Can you please elaborate on your processing on drums and loudness approach?
- What is your approach on drum peaks? Do you just prefer ‘gain stage well, and let them live as it is.’ Or do you ‘clip, saturate, control transient?’
Thanks for reading this. Hope you enjoy 2025!
