Bit Depth on export

Thanks for the great video.

just wanted to understand something regarding bit depth.

You mentioned that you will sometimes deliver an unlimited mix in 32bit float to the mastering engineer.

Does that mean that you convert the files onto your session to 32bit before you even start the mix or do you mix at whatever bit depth it is and then export at 32bit float?

Nope, just bouncing the mix at 32 bit. Having it floating point lets the mastering engineer turn the file down and recover all of the peaks the limiter would have shaved off, do whatever they’re doing, then put it back through the limiter. I only do this with mastering engineers I know and trust, otherwise the limited version of the mix is the mix.
