How do I come to a point of confidently doing less than I could and keeping a natural feel but still catch a clients ear and justify hiring me when the difference to the rough mix is evident to me but maybe subtle.
I sometimes catch myself throwing more on the mix than it might need just because I think the client might need to hear “something” more obvious beeing added to think a mixing engineer is worth it.
interesting question Tobias…
if your not adding value to a mix somehow then at some point your not going to get offered mixes! that may sound drastic but the mix engineers role is to elevate the production, your right that sometimes we feel like we haven’t done much to a mix but just getting a vocal sitting better can be enough to justify your involvement.
its all project dependent ultimately and you should seek answers from the producer or artist about what they dont like about the mix they have.
sometimes when i am mixing an album there will be mixes i do that are not that different to the mix they have already. i have even told clients the mix they have is good in the past and they should use it!
i don’t do that too often or i would not be working!!
hope that’s helpful
