Definition in a mix

Hi Tchad, I know that you like creating super interesting sounds and trying and experimenting with distortion. What is your thinking about keeping definition and contrast once you start sculpting the mix with all the fun stuff that you had. Keeping an interesing low-mid, but have a well define mix. Avoiding harshness without having a mix that’s too dark.
Thank you!

I’m really just listening to how things add up. You can see in the video I zig-zag across the session tweaking when I hear something that bothers me. For definition, not all the instruments need to be edgy or bright. When you tweak everything in one range you’ll get an undesirable build up of those frequencies. With panning, EQ and levels you want to have all the instruments kind of borrow or trade timbre from one another. I’ll often filter high frequency off one instrument if there’s another that’s got that range covered. Or I may scoop out midrange of the piano if there’s plenty in the guitars.
Make sense? Experiment!
