I know you said good recording is half the job, so when your dealing with bad recording and mics how do you combat it?
Lots of spectral resonance shaping 
early reflections for those boxy vocals, manual clean up (line trim, manual de-essing, de-clicking, etc)

Lool i was thinking the same thing about resonance shaping, but this is very helpful and i will be using more early reflection for them boxy vocals
