Mix Bus vs Track by Track Approach — Curious About Your Mixing Process!

Hey Tony! Just wanted to say I absolutely love your work!

While watching your new Mixing Air series, I noticed you start with the mix bus, which feels a bit different from your approach with Air and M83’s “Midnight City” where you seemed to build the mix more track-by-track.

Is this shift related to mixing in the box versus mixing on a console? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Also, I seriously can’t wait for your new series especially if you’re mixing Beck or Belle & Sebastian track. So exciting!

Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge — all the best to you!

For several years when I was mainly on a console I would always start with the compressor (Smart C1) and EQ (GML 8200) in on the stereo buss. That workflow worked great for me but when I moved to mostly ‘In The Box’ I changed it to where I would only start with the EQ turned on first to get my general EQ profile and then add compression once I’ve got the main elements sounding good including vocals.

Basically, if I’m working on something where I’ll want to have everything ‘glued’ together I might start with the compressor on at the beginning of the mix. If I want more transients to come thru I may add it later once things are built up a bit. -Tony
