I just mixed the biggest song of my life (so far), a potential mega hit here in Denmark, Copenhagen. I delivered a masterpiece, I showed it to family members and my peers and they were all blown away.
I spent days carving their faulty recordings - RX and what not, manual labor - to perfection (in my mind at least!), but anyway, turns out they don’t want to go with my mix and instead opted for a mix from a ‘mix friend’ from the producer, and I can hear it is just their rough mix polished a bit…
My heart was broken, tears running down my face. I feel useless and I really took a hit on my self worth.
I know this scenario is nothing new, and I know all the greats have had similar experiences.
But how do you guys deal with it? And how about the client, what should I do with the relationship?
In the music business you can have all the talent in the world and somehow it’s not enough. Cartel like schemes and favors and friends seem to be the foundation of it all.
