Importance of mix reacting to limiting

Hi Tony. Great to see you mix this record from scratch. It left me wondering about my methodology when it comes to the mix bus and in particular limiting. Is the question of how will my mix react to limiting at any point something that pops into your workflow? I find that to be true in my mixes especially since I’m also expected to master often. This is where I get a bit lost between the mix balance that I want with perhaps more low end, and a loud master where I find I need to sacrifice some bass for loudness and more subtle limiting.

Hi Bogdan,

Good question… I don’t worry too much what the limiter will be doing as I don’t limit very much. On my stereo buss I’ll do a couple dB of clipping and then a couple dB of limiting after the clipper and and that usually gets me pretty loud. The heavy lifting is usually happening on the individual tracks/busses before hitting the mix buss so there’s less the limiter needs to do.. . and being the limiter is not limiting a drastic amount there’s rarely a noticeable difference when I turn it on.

Thanks a lot Tony. I appreciate the reply.
