I wrote and produced this song in response to the events that were happening in Minnesota in January. Admittedly, its production was rushed in order to get it out as soon as possible so that it might serve as a rallying cry for many of the citizens of Minneapolis and the U.S. at large.
It’s meant to be angry and in-your-face with a powerful lyrical message and a driving beat fit for a crowd. While the mix I did was serviceable, given the short amount of time I was able to spend, I feel like I left a lot of power on the table. In particular, I think those drums could cut through far better than they do.
It would be AMAZING to have a true master’s talents put towards this track. And it would likely also show a lot of MWTM viewers/listeners how to approach their records to maximize the power of what’s meant to be conveyed.
Either way, I’m so grateful just to get to submit it for consideration. Thank you for giving it a listen!
This is a song by my band The Prescriptions - it was recorded mostly live as a band, then twisted and ultra harmonized and made mad - it’d be a blast to hear Tchad cut loose on this. Thanks!
Linked is the song “Out of Love,” which I hope will be an interesting one for a mixing session. While only 3 ^ 1/2 minutes, it is divided into four distinct sections - a 90 second rock song followed by a minute long bridge jamming on a jazzy chord pattern, next comes a brief interlude of guitars with the feeling of being in a night club, and finally a piano and vocal. The lyrics explore the challenges of living a life together with another person, both the certainty and the uncertainty. Here is the Soundcloud link - Out of Love by The Innocent Bystanders
Thank you so much for considering me for this opportunity. How generous of you to share your talents and experience. I’m submitting “28 Until The End,” an unreleased track from the debut EP for my solo alt-folk artist project, Asayo. I write, perform, produce, and mix all of my Asayo releases, which has been really gratifying and a great learning experience, but this song was by far the hardest to mix because of its build from a few instruments to a pretty full arrangement by the end (vocals and background vocals, guitars, piano, wurli & organ, percussion, and live and midi strings). Did I get carried away? Maybe.
I’d love to learn from your process and perspective as a mixer with both technical instincts and producer sensibilities. I’m building my mixing technique on top of a songwriting/production foundation, and this song has a significant build that I think requires precision in the mix for the arc to land. I also wanted the textures of each instrument to be able breathe while still feeling integrated as part of a cohesive whole. My goal in the mix was to keep the opening intimate and breathable, then let it fill out gradually as the song builds (except for that little blip post-chorus that expands and then contracts again), so it grows gradually into a full, powerful ending without getting too congested. I’d love to see where your instincts would take you and what you might hear that I haven’t.
Also a note, the track is explicit but I have a clean version if that makes a difference.
I’m submitting this track called You’re not mine that I wrote and produced myself for the session. I’d be really curious to hear how Tchad Blake might reinterpret it and shape it through his own sonic lens.
The song was recorded and mixed in my own studio. It combines organic instruments with layered textures and fairly detailed arrangements, so I feel it has the potential to evolve in interesting ways under Tchad’s approach.
Excited to see how the process unfolds, and wishing everyone the best of luck!
Hi Tchad, Tony and all at MWTM. Thanks for providing the opportunity to us members to have our work mixed by some absolute masters of their craft.
I’m submitting a jazz hip-hop production of mine. It’s a European rap duo who rap in 5 different languages in their music. We turned this into a fun and punchy piece, adding Sth American indigenous instrumentation as well as some flute and bass clarinet played by a real talent in the Berlin jazz scene. Hope you like what you hear: it’s straight to the point and would likely sound better with you guys lending your expertise. Hope you like it!
This song comes from a very personal place for me. I wrote and produced it with a deep focus on emotion, space, and musical honesty. My goal was not just to make a track, but to create something that truly breathes and tells a story.
Having the chance to hear it through your perspective and experience would be incredibly meaningful. Your mixes have shaped so many records that inspired me along the way, so the idea of this song passing through your hands is both exciting and humbling.
Thank you again for the opportunity and for listening.
Hey everyone,
What an amazing opportunity we’re all being given here.
This track, “Superhero” from an band I record, mix & play drums in (Distempo) is a yet to be released draft mix. The bed track (drums, bass, rhythm guitar) came from a recording of a rehearsal in my home studio where we were experimenting with different feels, tempo’s etc. We decided this version was a good enough bed with the right vibe to overdub on without re-recording from scratch. It’d be incredible to see where a mixing legend like you Tchad would take it.
Thanks for the chance to put it forward
We are Average Friends. We have been making music for a minute and we are finally getting stuff over the finish line. Submitting our track “u know i luv u”.
We wanted it to feel like a modern pop record with that early 2000s heart on your sleeve vibe. Looking for help on getting our vocals to sit in front of such a punchy mix.
Ok, here’s a rough mix of a song that I would love to have Tchad mix. I’m going for a bit of that Weezer Green album vibe here. Side note for Tchad - I know you mixed the last Counting Crows record. That’s Jim Bogios on drums on this track. Fingers crossed.
What’s up MWTM community! This is a song by my band Ace McGuire’s Acid Tabs. My partner Mitch and I did all the writing, recording, mixing and mastering on this track and took a lot of advice from many of the Master’s videos including Tchad. It would be such a cool experience to have our song remixed by a true legend in the field. Enjoy the song!
Hi Tchad! I hope it isn’t too late to submit my track! I rushed to finish this one today because I think it’s right up your alley. Would love to hear what you would do with this.
Right now, I can best describe this as “Jazz Riot Grrl.” But throw in a spoonful of the Doors, Tori Amos, and Fiona Apple.
I would love to hear this massaged into a more mainstream track – but still with the theatrics of someone like Florence.
About me: I’m SaraEllen, and I do “Northwest Noir.” It’s a bit of jazz, dark pop, haunted houses, and a bit of David Lynch.
This song started out as a poem I wrote in college. It has a very simple piano accompaniment and some basic percussion. There’s a lot of space in the current recording.
