I am doing a 5.1 mix for the first time for a movie this weekend and need this question answered in the next few hours. I am using Pro Tools in the box. If I deliver the stems as AWM.BDF files, will they playback in the theater correctly in their object positions. Or will something get lost during the editing process? In other words, if I just give the editor the .WAV files, will they automatically play back in Atmos? Or is there an extra step? I am using Dolby Atmos Renderer and can place the objects in their positions.
If you can open and play the ADM BWF file with the Renderer you can be sure that the file will be correctly interpreted by any Atmos player. Just check that the frame rate is correct (24 fps) and that the sample rate is 48K.
The whole idea of the Atmos standard is that the reader will adapt the file to the available environment.
I thought so, when I bounced it as an Atmos file, it played back in mono, which sort of threw me a little, but then I bounced it in ADM. BWF .WAV file, it played back beautifully. The movie is complete and will screen at the RANGOS Omnimax Theater in Pittsburgh in a 5.1 theater, so, fingers crossed that it will work!
